Aims:
o Recognise chronic sorrow and understand its possible impact
upon individuals with a disability or serious illness and their families
o Gain confidence in developing positive working relationships with
individuals and their families and agreeing realistic goals and
interventions
This Course covers:
o The model of chronic sorrow and its significance within theories of
loss and bereavement
o How the history and models of disability relate to chronic sorrow
o Issues influencing the existence and intensity of chronic sorrow
o Signs of chronic sorrow, and how these might differ from those of
prolonged grieving or depression
o How chronic sorrow might affect individuals' and families' belief
systems and views of themselves, and the world around them
o Potential triggers and complicating factors, and how these might
vary depending on the individual
o Helpful interventions
o The desirable attributes of professionals who work with individuals
and families with chronic sorrow
